Merge Internet

V.92 Information

There have recently been some new developments in modem technology. A new standard - v.92 - for modems has been developed that allows for extra functionality for 56K modem users. Merge Internet has been involved in the testing of this new standard for several months. Our systems have been upgraded to accommodate the new v.92 features. Rather then repeat information that has already been written by others, we've provided links to documentation on what new features V.92 brings to 56K modems, below. Briefly, though, the V.92 standard brings these major improvements to 56K modem technology:

Modem on Hold - the ability for your modem to sense the call-waiting beep, and temporarily suspend your internet connection to allow you to answer an incoming phone call. V.44 Compression - Enhanced data compression that results in improved download rates. V.PCM - allows faster upload speeds. Current 56K modems typically only send data at up to 31,200bps. V.PCM allows upload speeds of up to 48,000 bps. Quick Connect - V.92 modems can 'learn' the characteristics of your phone line, and save various settings that current 56K modems have to test for every time they connect. This can drastically shorten the time it takes to establish a connection with Merge.
