Loading Time : What is "Accelerated Dial-up?" Accelerated Dial-up, or, as some providers call it "Highspeed Dial-up" is not the same as "Broadband Internet" or "Highspeed Internet." Both of those require new hardware at the customers location. Both are fairly expensive, at better then $29.95 for the "lite" packages. And both are subject to several restrictions - location being one of the more obvious ones. DSL and Cable internet only work in areas in which those services are available. Accelerated dial-up uses your existing modem, and works on any phone line, anywhere. How much faster is the X7 Supercharge service? Due to the differences in how objects are created for use on the World Wide Web, there is a pretty wide variance in how much faster X7 will be. Among other things, X7 relies on new methods of compressing data. Some things on a web page - and some pages - can be compressed more then others. So, the best answer to this is to talk about "average" speed increases. On average, the X7 service will improve your speed about 5 to 7 times faster than normal dialup. So, while it isn't as fast as cable or DSL, it *is* faster then the "lite" version of those services - and considerably cheaper. What does it cost? Our rates for Merge Internet X7 Supercharge are:
InstallationInstalling the X7 Supercharge client is fairly straightforward. Simply click on the X7 Client link in the left margin. A "File Download" dialog box will open up. Click "Save." Next, a "Save As" window will open. Choose a folder to save the file in - The simplest is to choose "Desktop." Wait for the download to complete. When it's finished, close your Internet Explorer, so you can see the Desktop, and click on the "Setup" icon that you just downloaded. The Merge Internet X7 Accelerator Installation program will start. Follow the instructions as they appear - basically, just click "Next" when prompted. That's it.The setup program should automatically detect your Merge Internet username and password right out of your Dial Up settings, but if it does ask your for them, the username and password will be the same ones you use to connect to Merge Internet, and to get your email. Note that at this point, you still can't actually use the X7 service. There's one step left. The last step is to phone us at 905-988-9998, or email tech@mergetel.com, and ask us to activate your account for the X7 Supercharge service. We're offering all existing customers a 30 day free trial, so please try it out! Features of Merge Internet X7 Supercharge:Merge X7 has a few more features then just speeding up your web browsing. It can also speed up your email - both sending and receiving, and it has several built in utilities to make your web browsing more enjoyable. Some of those are discussed below. Our X7 Supercharge service is made possible by technology developed by Slipstream, and is the same technology in use by some of the major ISP's in the US. Web AccelerationThe main function of the Merge Internet X7 Supercharge service is to speed up your web browsing. As mentioned above - How much faster is the X7 Supercharge service? - it does this by compressing the information you request from the Web, before we send it down to you. Since different types of web content allow different degrees of compression, the actual speed increase will vary depending on what you are doing. That said, in our testing of this technology, we found that an average increase of between 5 and 7 times faster then normal dial-up speed is reasonable to expect. What gets accelerated? To achieve the fastest web and email acceleration available, proprietary lossless compression is applied to text, html, xml, javascript and style sheets. Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg images and Flash content. Merge X7 also accelerates email traffic, and is compatible with any POP3/SMTP client, including Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Mail. The Merge Internet X7 Supercharge will not currently accelerate file downloads such as music files, or streaming video or audio media. What doesn't get accelerated? Certain file types are already compressed, before they are made available on the internet. Downloads of any .zip format, or other compressed files, or audio/video files like mpg, mpeg, mp3, and wma files won't be accelerated because they are already as compressed as they are likely to get. Email AccelerationThe SlipStream solution’s state-of-the-art data compression algorithm also provides significant performance gains in sending and receiving email. With full support for the POP3 and SMTP protocols, the SlipStream platform applies its unique data compression, content and network optimizations to send and receive email messages and attachments on dial-up with increased speed. The email acceleration solution has been integrated transparently, eliminating the need to address any settings or configuration issues prior to using the solution. The Merge Internet X7 Supercharge email solution is compatible with all email client applications including Microsoft Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger and QUALCOMM Eudora.Pop-up BlockingOne of the major nuisances of the internet are pop-up ads. In the last few months, pop-up ads have become somewhat more then mere aggravations, though. There are now pop-up ads that automatically install software on your computer, at the same time they are showing you the advertising. More and more often, that software is proving to be something called a "third party dialer." These are malicious programs that offer "free" access to some site - games, psychic readings, adult content, to name a few - but it isn't really free. When you attempt to access the content, the third party dialer is invoked, and your internet connection is disconnected. Then the dialer places a long distance telephone call, either to a "900" number, or to someplace like the Cooks Islands (off New Zealand), Sao Tome (islands off the coast of Africa), or a few other places. At rates around $4.00 per minute on your long distance bill. These dialers have been around for years - it's only recently that you can get them installed without any action on your part.If there are sites that you actually want to see the pop-ups, it is also possible to whitelist those particular places, to allow pop-ups from them, while still protecting yourself against those on other sites. For more information about third party dialers please see our Spyware Information Page In-Page Ad BlockingWhile not as potentially dangerous as the current crop of Pop-up ads, in-page advertising is starting to overwhelm some web sites. Merge Internet X7 Supercharge includes the ability to turn on blocking of these banner ads. With this feature enabled, you'll no longer download all those ads, which will help to improve your overall speed.Floating Flash AdsWith the increasing number of utilities that allow internet users to block pop-up ads, the creators of those ads have been moving to somewhat different methods of creating pop-up type advertising. One of the more common is the floating flash ad. These don't pop up a new browser window - like a pop-up ad - but they actually create an animated, floating window above the browser pane. Since they use Flash, they aren't detected by most pop-up blockers. Our X7 Client can detect these ads, and stop them from appearing.Flash CompressionMore and more web sites are starting to incorporate Flash animations and other Flash content. The current version of the Merge Internet X7 Supercharge client includes options to allow you to turn on compression of this Flash content, further increasing your overall speed.New in Version 3.2: Advanced image compressionThe new version features new advanced compression for images which results in an approximate 20 percent increase in performance when viewing images, as well as an overall improvement in the quality of the images. What this means to you is that you'll see better quality images with the X7 Acceleration enabled with an increase in performance.X7 Tips and TricksViewing ImagesTo view images on web pages at the original full quality, you don't need to adjust the "Settings" slide bar in the X7 Client. You can just move your mouse over the image an click the right mouse button. On the menu that comes up there will be 2 new items: "Show Original Image" and "Show All Original Images." The first will show you the image you're hovering over at the original quality, the second will show all the images on the current page.Turning off Acceleration for a specific siteOnce in a rare while you might come across a page that doesn't display correctly. You can suspend the acceleration for this site, only, by clicking the X7 Supercharge Icon on your start bar, clicking "Settings" then "Features" then "Proxy Exclusion." In there, type the www address of the site you want to exclude. You can list more then one site by separating them with ;Excluding sites from Popup BlockingYou can allow popups from specific sites by clicking the X7 Supercharge Icon on your start bar, clicking "Popup Blocking" and then clicking "Whitelist." Add the site that you want to allow popups from here.Note that sites that have had popups blocked are listed under "Logging." If a site is listed here you can add it to the whitelist to allow popups, by clicking the right mouse button on the site address, and choosing "Add to Whitelist." |
