Watercolour Workshop Supply List - 2008
 Linda Kemp

If you are attending a negative painting workshop bring your usual watercolour supplies
**** Please don't buy everything on my list, these are the basics that I use.

Paints I use freshly squeezed Holbein watercolours, but the choice of manufacturer is up to you.
Paint should be artists’ quality in tubes. The following is a list of colours I use most frequently:

    Transparent Non-Staining Pigments
Cobalt Blue, Raw Sienna, Cobalt Violet, Burnt Sienna

    Transparent Staining Pigments
Marine Blue [Phthalo Blue], Bamboo Green [Phthalo Green], Rose Violet [Quinacridone Violet]

    Opaque Sedimentary Pigments
Cerulean Blue or Cobalt Turquoise, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red

    * Holbein Jaune Brilliant 1&2, Holbein Blue-grey, Holbein Acrylic Gouache Ivory or White
are specialty opaque colours that are used only occasionally - you may have a difficult time to find them.I will bring samples to class for you to try.

Brushes   Bring your usual brushes. My favourites include the following:
Flat- Robert Simmons Sky Flow 1½", 2"
1" flat Kemp Badger or “Skipper” bristle or badger type brush (old oil brush will do)
Round- Sable or sable/synthetic mix #8,#10 or larger

Paper   Good quality paper- buy as single sheets not in coil or glued pads. Please bring sheets not blocks.
I use Arches and Strathmore 140lb or 300lb cold press or Waterford 200lb Watercolour paper.
Students may use 90lb for exercises.  Do not stretch and tape paper before class.  For most class
exercises I recommend working on 1/4 sheets and smaller.
For a full week class you will need three full sheets.

Plexiglas to use instead of a board to paint on, slightly larger than your piece of watercolour paper e.g. for
11x15 paper (½ sheet), plexi should be about 14x18. You can purchase at a glass shop, or building supply
store.  Plexi doesn't need to be perfect, ask for a second. You should not pay more than $12-15.00 max.
